Maya People: Finally – Recognition as Equals in Development and Participation
The Country of Belize is blessed with Maya People, a direct descendant of the Ancient Maya, a society that existed long before Christ, they have established their cities in the Yucatan Peninsula, in the north, Belize and Guatemala in the central area and north of el Salvador and Honduras in the south of the Maya World. Making up a complex civilization with a population of over 30 million people that had 31 tribes, each tribe spoke their own dialect, where the kings unified every tribe into one common culture.
“Belize was formed in Maya Land, Maya People are Belize”. The land occupied by Belize, was originally occupied by the Mayas. Their traditional farming includes mainly root and grain crops, with the traditional cacao, as the main basis of their civilization. They have traditionally practiced environmentally safe farming methods. Clearing small acreages to farm organically and a common currency was the natural care as it relates to watershed areas, as it was common knowledge and respect to the practice of protection of one of the most vital sources of livelihood, water.
The Maya People depended on the rainforest for everything, food, shelter and water. Rivers are utilized heavily for bathing, washing, and drinking water. The Maya Leader alliance, was compromised to work together, putting jurisdiction in every village of their customary land rights, especially the ones that already had pillars. It is our desire to have sincere and honest management in place.
I plan to work closely with the People of Maya Ancestry, to develop equality in a party that have respected the original inhabitants for full participatory representation in the way forward. As a Director, I represent the Maya on the Executive of the Belize People’s Front political party, the first party to give recognition to our ancestors and the respect they deserve.
