Recall Mechanism for the Area Representative for Cayo North East

Topic: Recall Mechanism for the Area Representative for Cayo North East
The Belize People’s Front notes with concern that the petition to begin the recall process for the Area Representative for Cayo North East has been rejected. This failure of this basic mechanism of our democratic process should be one of concern for all Belizeans. It seems more than convenient that this petition, likely to cause embarrassment and difficulty to the government, has been rejected, despite the signatures collected.
Considering the rejection of the Oceana petition on similar grounds, makes one aware of the meticulousness of the incumbents in this regard. A stark contrast in relation to the very actions that sparked the recall process in the first place. While the amount or the sameness of signatures gathered may not pass scrutiny, it is the strong collective voice of the people, echoed through this action that should make the most impact. This voice is heard not just from the constituents, but also in the wider Diaspora.
The Belize People’s Front supports the demands of Senator Lisa Shoman and other Belizeans asking for an immediate independent inquiry into the passport and visa affair. Justice is being denied by the lack of an independent inquiry. The lack thereof is most worrisome, especially coupled with the rejection of the recall mechanism; if this is left unchecked it would amount to tyranny. Only an independent inquiry will satisfy the demands of accountability in this international embarrassment of the Belizean people.
