Luz Maria Hunter
Standard Bearer
Luz Maria Hunter (born 1956) was named after her mother and great, great grandmother. She grew up in Belize City right next to the river and directly across from the Supreme Court and Treasury Buildings. In her early years she spent most of the time at her father’s dairy farm and also spent a lot of time in the city at her Grandparents’ looking at the river and the fishermen who passed by with their catch of the day. Later, she spent all the summers on Ambergris Caye, a most beautiful and bountiful island with her maternal grandparents and neighbours, the Guerreros.
After graduation and a crashed dream of becoming a vet, she found herself in the Tourism Industry at the Bellevue Hotel and since then; she has been deeply involved in various aspects of the industry, from bar tending to sailboat charter crew, and on to diving, snorkeling, birding and eventually, Tour Guide Trainer for the BTB.
As a guide and naturalist on board several small cruise ships travelling to and through Belize, she has been fortunate to see many of Belize’s beautiful treasures and have met a lot of her beautiful people. As an adult, she has learned what is important in life and that wants are not necessarily needs, but that sometimes going after material wants can leave a person without what a human really needs… clean air, clean water and a good, healthy environment. To this end, she has committed to work in any way that she can, to protect the health of our environment which will in return ensure that the real needs of the people who call Belize their home, are being met.
Some of her hobbies and other interests includes reading, gardening and birding. She has a soft spot for anyone or anything who is homeless, injured or abandoned. Unwanted children, the elderly and pets that have been abandoned or neglected are abundant in Belize, and she has a dream of starting a foundation that will address this problem affecting our society today.
Luz has become part of the Belize People’s Front as a Standard Bearer for the Belize Rural Central area and is very committed to serve her constituency to the best of her capabilities.
